  1. Hello Benghazi 5A!

Water powered rockets! That must have been so much fun! I like that you also learned about parachutes. As we all know, a rocket without a parachute is a pain to tidy up!

That was some great learning, and you have inspired me to try this with my class sometime. Keep up the great learning.

    1. Hello Mr. Wong,

We were so excited to see your post on our blog, we didn’t expect anyone to comment! Thanks you made the student’s day. It’s a great STEM program the we were a part of called The Wonder Project. They sent us all the supplies, curriculum and connected us with an ambassador who came and helped us with out rocket designs. I highly recommend checking out the organziation as they have different STEM projects for each term and different age groups.

There is a Rocket Challenge planned for terms 1 and 2 2023.

Hello Benghazi 5A! I am Mrs Siō from Pt England School. I teach in Room 9 (Year 5’s).

Your rocket challenged was so cool! Our class would like to have a try. How did you design your rocket? What did you use to make it successful?

My class Room 9, will ask some more questions about your rocket.

What a great MFF movie – keep it up! Faafetai lava!

    1. Malo e lelei,

Hello Benghazi 5A! My name is Junior from Pt England School from Room 9

Your rocket challenge was so cool! Our class would like to have a try. Why did you choose the rocket challenge? Did you get help from Rocket Lab.

What a great MFF movie – keep it up!

    2. Hello,

We are so glad that you and your students really enjoyed our rocket movie. It was a big learning challenge for us and we had to work on the project in short sessions but the students absolutely LOVED the unit. I would highly recommend looking into The Wonder Project, it’s an organziaiton that supports students in the area of science. There are different nationwide challenges each term related to a variety of science topics. The challenges have recommended year levels but as we found, the teaching materials are easily adapatable. For the rocket challenge we were assigned an ambassador (ours was an engineer) to help us build our rockets. Most of the materials were sent to us (launcher, hi-vis vests, example parachute). The only materials we needed to collect were the soda bottles and the bike pump.

The comments and questions from your class were really great. It means a lot to our class and student whanau to have other students acknowledge our hard work.
I know it’s a crazy time of the year but since you are down the street from us would your class be interested in meeting us? My students would love the oppertunity to launch the rockets again and a few students said they wanted to try launching their own rocket. I know we have few extra practice rockets, they aren’t as fancy as our video ones but they launch just as well. If this is something you think might be possible please email me, catherine@sommerville.school.nz and we can see if we can plan something.

Thank you Room 9 for your questions and supporting our Benghazi 5A learners.

i really liked your class movie, of your rocket built with a fizzy bottle filled with water.

our class would like to know how, to the rocket was built what materials did you use.

well done \ keep up with you good leaning

    1. Kia Orana Memory,

Good question. For our decorations we used pieces of coloured paper and carbaord to make our fins. Some students added stickers and some christmas decorations to their bottles. We even had one rocket with a lego person in it as the astronaut!
For our parachutes most students used a rubbish bag that they cut into a smaller size. Some students did try with other materials such as paper and cloth.

Thank you for your question. It was a surprise to see so many posts on our video.

I really liked your class movie, of your rocket built with a fizzy bottle filled with water. our class would like to know how the rocket was built ?

Keep it up with your learning.

    Ka Kite!

    1. Kia Orana Motu,

We tried many different materials before deciding which ones worked best. The main part of the rocket was made with a soda bottle and the decorations were made with coloured paper. Students explored with paper size and shape to find which worked best or in some cases what they liked best. They also used stickers and old holiday decorations to make their rocket unique. For the parachutes students used fabric, and rubish bags to see which worked best.

What materials did you use? well done/keep up with your learning.

    1. Talofa lava Dwayne,

The students explored with many different types of rockets and materials before we started using the soda bottles. Did you know the the water level changes how well the rocket will fly?

The base of our rocekts were soda bottles. Students used a variety of coloured paper, carboard, tape and stickers to deceorate their rockets and make the fins. We even tried using blocks of wood at one stage for the fins. One of the students also used some holiday decorations to make his rocket more fancy.

    1. Talofa Lave Maraea,

Thanks for posting on our blog, we were excited to see so many posts. We used two soda bottles to make the body of the rocket. Student used coloured paper and cardboard to make the fins. Some students used stickes, tape and holiday materials to add decorations to their rockets.
For the parachute we cut up rubbish bags and used string to attach it to the rocket.

    1. Talofa Lava Sa,

Our rockets were made from recycled soda bottles, we used two for each rocket. Students used a mix of colored paper, tape and stickers to design our rockets. During the launch process we fill the rocket with water and used a bike pump to add water pressure.

Thank you for supporting our learners.

  8. Kia Ora!

Hello Benghazi 5A! I am Zohaidah from pt England school in room 9. Your Rocket challenge was so cool and interesting, you all are so creative. I really enjoyed watching your MFF movie, How did you manage to build your rocket? Keep up the good work.

    1. Kia ora Zohaidah,

We are so glad you enjoyed our movie. This movie is one of our favourite class videos. We watch it often and get excited everytime. The students thought it was absolutley amazing to see themselves on the big screen at the cinema.
It took us a long time to build our rockets. We used coloured paper, stickers, holiday decorations and tape to make our fins and docorate the rockets. For the parachutes we used rubbish bags and cut them to be different sizes.

i really liked your class movie of your rocket built with a fizzy bottle. What did you do to make the rocket go in mid air? what items did you use? faafetai lava!

    1. Talofa lava Pritchard,

Launching our rockets was the best part! Making the rocket fly took balance between the rocket weight, the water level, the air pressure and angle of the rocket launcher. The body of the rocket is two soda bottles and then students used a mix of coloured paper, carboard, tape, stickers and pieces of wood to create fins and decorations.

    1. Kia Orana Tatiana,

We would love to share our rockets. It was a lot of work but we really enjoyed it. The students were so excited at our launch party, where we invited our friends and families to watch our final launch.
The interest your class has given to our rockets has been very exciting for us. Thank you for supporting our learners.

    1. Talofa lava Akira-lee,

It’s great you enjoyed our movie. We love this movie too. The students ask to watch it all the time. We did use paper, stickers, and tape to decorate and build the fins. Great observation. We cut rubbished bags to make our parachutes. Did you know that the amount of water can cause the rocket to go higher or lower?

Hello Benghazi 5A! My name is NuNu at Pt England School from Rm 9. Your rocket challenge was so cool because the parachute and rocket were flying so fast.

I want to know what materials you use to make the rocket and a parachute.

Keep up the amazing work and amazing movie.

    1. Kia Ora NuNu,

The parachutes really made a difference to the flight of the rocket. It took some time to find the best shape for the parachute, but we eventually found a size and shape. Launching the rockets was out favourite part. Using a laucher helped us get our rocket flying high.

We use colored paper, cardboard, tape, holiday decorations and stickers to design our rockets. For the parachutte we tried a variety of materials but ended up using rubbish bags cut into different sizes.
